John Denver became a star thanks to the folk songs that he wrote, many of which were located in Colorado. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. was born in Roswell in New Mexico. Take Me Home Country Roads, co-written by Bill Danoff and Denver after his brief career in folk groups which was Denver's first Top 10 solo hit. Danoff had Johnny Cash as the inspiration for the tune, however Denver recognized that the song could turn into a hit once it was discovered that an earlier version. The song was recorded just a few weeks after the Washington D.C. performance.
